Scouts Addressing Hunger in the Community
In alignment with Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals – “Zero Hunger,” the Ilorin South Local Association took a proactive stance to address hunger within their community. On the 28th of October 2022, scouts from the association embarked on a mission to feed 200 people in Oja Oba Ilorin Market.
The initiative aimed not only to alleviate immediate hunger but also to promote the values of scouting and demonstrate the care and compassion that scouts embody. As Mother Teresa once said, “You don’t have to be a millionaire before you reach out to people around you. If you can’t feed a hundred people, then start with one.” This ethos guided the scouts as they reached out to their community members in need.
The scene at Oja Oba Ilorin Market was poignant, as people of all ages eagerly gathered around the scouts, eager for sustenance and support. Despite the overwhelming demand, the scouts remained composed and ensured that each person received a meal, offering comfort and solace in times of need.
Scouter Bamidele Victor (John.K.), District Commissioner of ILORIN South, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Scouter Isiaka Taiye Kareemat for her dedication and sacrifices in preparing the food. Additionally, special thanks were extended to Mrs. Ahmed Habibat, the State Commissioner for Girls Guide in Kwara State, who joined in the effort to share food in the market.
The success of the program was a testament to the collaborative efforts of all involved, demonstrating that when communities come together, they can make a tangible difference in the lives of others. As the saying goes, “The more we are together, the happier we shall be.”
In conclusion, let us acknowledge and appreciate the Ilorin South Local Association, the Kwara State Scout Council, and The Scout Association of Nigeria for their unwavering commitment to serving their community and addressing hunger. Together, they exemplify the true spirit of scouting and inspire hope for a brighter, more compassionate future.
